A knife sharpener will maintain a fine and polished edge for a knife. Though a very sharp edge can be intimidating, a dull blade can be equally dangerous. This is because it will often require more force to cut. Leaning extensively into a blade can reduce control.

When purchasing a knife sharpener, there a few different choices with which a buyer will be faced. Both manual and mechanical options are available. The right choice will depend on price range as well as personal taste, of course.

An electronic knife sharpener will commonly use orbiting diamond plates. Manual options include ceramic styles which are simple and low maintenance. Butcher's steels and sharpening stones are other by-hand choices.
